Search Answers: “Good Clothing for Anthropologists”

Indiana Jones

Love that hat!

I get a lot of traffic from search engines. Posts in this category are answers or responses to the search queries that lead people to my blog.

I have had two people find there way to my blog with the search “good clothing for anthropologists.” My first thought, of course, was Indy. I mean when I think of what I would wear if I wanted say, “Look at me; I’m an anthropologist!” Indy is the first person who pops into my head.

However, my second thought was, “Hey, I think I have searched for that too!” The first time I went to a AAA conference, I went online to track down what the hip fashion for anthropologists was. What I found was that most anthropologists  dress like everyone else. However, as a student of identity and representation, I have observed that anthropologists often like to represent their work through their clothes and accessories. Anthropology students and faculty I know and the AAA conference goers can often be seen sporting jewelry, fabric patterns, designs and accessories that reflect there interests in world cultures (and sometimes in Indiana Jones).

Me at the AAAs with my husband.

Pretty Scarf! One of my favorites.

In talking to other anthropologists about fashion, I have also learned that anthropologists are also often conscious about the ethics of what they wear. Fair trade items are popular; however, wearing symbols and dress respectfully is also important.

So, my answer to this search query is to dress appropriately and professionally for the setting. But, if you really want to represent yourself through your clothes as an anthropologist, consider adding flair that represents your anthropological interests. Just do so respectfully!

P.S. In the end I choose a black suit with a pretty colorful scarf for the AAAs. 🙂
